Preparing Employees of the 3M Company Impacted by the Pension Freeze in 2029

The 3M Company CEO Mike Roman recently announced 2 significant changes impacting 3M non-union employees:

  • First, those individuals moving to Solventum and currently participating in the ERIP, Nonqualified and GRP may participate in “substantially replicated” pension programs at the new spin-off.  
  • Second, for 3M and Solventum non-union employees participating in the above-referenced pension plans will “freeze” on 12/31/2028.  As a pension eligible employee, “you will continue to accrue benefits according to the applicable pension plan terms until the freeze date.” All accruals will stop after 12/31/2028.

These significant changes are impacting many 3M Company employees. Many of you impacted may want to place more focus on your other retirement savings programs, especially your 3M Company and Solventum 401K plans. Considerations may include your allocations, 401K Roth contributions, Roth conversions, backdoor-Roth IRAs, HSA's, and deferred income programs, among others, to ensure a more confident financial journey toward abundance.
